Frequently Asked Questions

The Lares to Machu Picchu Trek is of moderate to challenging difficulty. You'll hike 6–8 hours per day for 3–4 days, covering a total distance of approximately 33–40 km, depending on the route. The maximum altitude reaches around 4,400–4,500 m at an Andean pass, so acclimatizing in Cusco for 2–3 nights is essential. The terrain combines mountain trails, glacial valleys, high-altitude lakes, and Quechua communities. Using mules/horses for luggage and an experienced guide enhance safety. It is ideal for travelers in good physical condition with basic experience in high-altitude trekking in the Peruvian Andes.

It usually includes: a pre-trip briefing in Cusco, transfer to the Lares Valley, a professional bilingual guide, camping equipment (tents and sleeping mats), a cook and all meals, boiled water, mules/horses to carry the duffel bag, entrance fees to Machu Picchu, bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu, train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes and back, a first-aid kit, and oxygen. Sometimes it includes an overnight hotel stay in Aguas Calientes or same-day return. It does not include: sleeping bag and trekking poles (available for rent), travel insurance, bottled drinks, tips, final lunch/dinner in Aguas Calientes, and optional entrance fees to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, which require advance booking.

The classic Lares Trek itinerary (4 days) combines Andean nature and culture. Day 1: Cusco – Lares Hot Springs – first campsite. Day 2: Hike through communities like Huacahuasi and cross a high pass overlooking lagoons. Day 3: Descent to Patacancha/Willoq, transfer to Ollantaytambo, and scenic train to Aguas Calientes. Day 4: Early morning bus to Machu Picchu, 2–3 hour guided tour, and free time; return by train in the afternoon or optional evening. 3- or 5-day variations are available. Logistics are optimized: private transportation, trains, and tickets coordinated for a stress-free trip in the Sacred Valley.

The best time to trek from Lares to Machu Picchu is during the dry season (May to September): clear skies, crisp views, and a lower chance of rain, with mild days (10–20°C) and cold nights that can drop to 0–5°C at high campsites. During the rainy season (October to April), there are fewer hikers and greener landscapes, but the trails are often wet, and fog and showers are frequent. The tour operates year-round, weather permitting. Pack layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, a -10°C sleeping bag, high-UV sunscreen, a hat, gloves, and a waterproof cover for your backpack and camera equipment.

Pack a 20–30 L daypack and a duffel bag (5–7 kg) that will be carried by mules. Essentials: waterproof trekking boots, thermal socks, layers (base layer, fleece, and down), poncho or waterproof jacket, hat and gloves, trekking poles with rubber tips, headlamp, hydration bottle/storage hydration pack, water filter or purification tablets, personal first-aid kit, energy snacks, and cash in soles. Acclimate in Cusco for 2–3 days, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and consider coca tea or altitude sickness medication. The tour operator carries emergency oxygen and a horse and performs daily check-ups. Inform them of any pre-existing medical conditions and purchase travel insurance.
