Tour Description

DAY 1: OLLANTAYTAMBO TO MACHU PICCHU: At the scheduled time, you'll board the train to Aguas Calientes departing from Ollantaytambo station to explore one of the Seven Wonders of the World. After a scenic one-and-a-half-hour train ride, you'll arrive at Aguas Calientes station, where our team will be ready to escort you to your hotel. There, you'll receive a brief orientation about the Machu Picchu tour planned for the following day.

Located in the province of Urubamba within the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Machu Picchu is part of a protected area under the National System of Protected Areas of the State. The altitude of Machu Picchu is 2,438 meters above sea level, with a climate that's warm and humid during the day and cool at night.

This enchanting location features forests filled with native trees like cedar and over 400 species of orchids, alongside other flowers such as begonias. The area is home to fascinating wildlife, including the Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Peru's national bird.

The town of Machu Picchu is quaint and easily walkable, offering opportunities to explore local art, crafts, and textiles at a charming market. You can also visit the hot springs (optional), an ideal spot for relaxation.

Note: Accommodation in Aguas Calientes is not included.

DAY 2: MACHU PICCHU TO CUSCO: Experience the magic of Machu Picchu at sunrise. You'll take a 30-minute bus ride up the winding road to Machu Picchu, enjoying breathtaking views of the Urubamba River and its canyon. The site, meaning “Old Mountain,” will captivate you with its terraces, ceremonial shrines, and urban sectors, all radiating a mystical energy.

This historic site is divided into two main areas. The agricultural section features extensive terraces and platforms, while the urban area was the center of significant religious activities. The Inca Empire rose from the Peruvian highlands in the early 13th century and concluded with the death of Inca Atahualpa in 1533.

Constructed in 1450 A.D. under Inca Pachacutec, the Citadel of Machu Picchu served as a prominent urban and religious hub for the Incan Empire, the largest civilization of the pre-Columbian era. The inhabitants focused on agriculture, utilizing terraces to cultivate their crops.

To truly immerse yourself in the Incan way of life, consider embarking on the Inca Trail trek. The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a favored outdoor adventure for travelers visiting Cusco.

Following a guided tour lasting two and a half hours, you'll have ample opportunity to explore Machu Picchu independently. You might choose to hike the Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountains (optional).

Alternatively, you can return to Aguas Calientes by bus for a leisurely lunch (optional) at one of the local restaurants known for their delicious Peruvian cuisine.

At the appointed time, you'll board the train back to Ollantaytambo, followed by a tourist bus to Cusco, where you'll be dropped off at your hotel in the historic center of Cusco.

The tour to Machu Picchu from Cusco typically includes: hotel pickup, transportation to the train station (Ollantaytambo or Poroy), round-trip train fare (Expedition or Vistadome classes), Consettur bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu, a bilingual official tour guide, and entrance ticket to the Machu Picchu citadel (Llaqta) according to the assigned circuit. Assistance is also provided during the trip. It typically does not include: meals (unless specified), optional entrance fees to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, travel insurance, tips, personal expenses, upgrades to the premium panoramic train, or accommodation in Aguas Calientes. Always verify the tour package description and the agency's policies before booking.

The typical itinerary begins with an early morning pick-up (approximately 4:00–5:00 AM), followed by a road transfer to the train station (Ollantaytambo/Poroy) and a scenic train ride to Aguas Calientes (1.5–2 hours). From there, a bus takes you to the Inca Citadel (25–30 minutes). The guided tour of Machu Picchu lasts 2–3 hours, following marked trails, visiting viewpoints, plazas, and iconic sites, with a short free time for photos. Afterward, you'll descend by bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included) and then board the return train. A vehicle will transfer you from the station to your hotel in Cusco. The full day typically lasts between 12 and 16 hours, with an estimated arrival time between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM.

Availability for Machu Picchu is limited by schedules and capacity. During peak season (May–September), book 2–3 months in advance; during low season, at least 2–4 weeks. Valid passport information is required to issue tickets; due to Ministry of Culture regulations, name changes are not usually permitted. Choose your train class (Expedition, Vistadome, or 360) and check the departure and return times that connect with your entrance ticket. Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain are optional, with limited capacity and a fixed schedule; they add 2–3 hours of extra hiking. Please note that entrance tickets are non-refundable and trains apply change fees.

The best time to visit Machu Picchu is during the dry season (May–September), with clearer skies and cooler mornings. During the rainy season (November–March), bring a lightweight raincoat. Pack layers of clothing, a windbreaker, a hat or cap, sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses, and sturdy hiking boots. Include a reusable water bottle, snacks, cash in soles, and your original passport (required for security checks). Use a small backpack (20–25 L); tripods and spray paint are restricted. Walking sticks with rubber tips are permitted. Choose an early entry time for photography in soft light or an afternoon entry time for fewer crowds. Book in advance on holidays and local festivals.

Machu Picchu is located at 2,430 meters above sea level and Cusco at 3,399 meters above sea level; it is recommended to acclimatize for 1–2 nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the tour. Stay hydrated, eat light meals, avoid alcohol the day before, and try coca or muña infusions. The circuit in the Llaqta includes stairs and uneven surfaces, so a basic level of fitness is required. Children and seniors can participate at a leisurely pace. If you suffer from heart, respiratory, knee, or vertigo problems, consult your doctor and bring your medication. Purchase travel insurance that covers assistance and potential evacuation. During the rainy season, use walking sticks and non-slip shoes.
