DAY 1

The thrilling journey begins bright and early as we depart from the city of Cusco. After collecting you from your hotel, we will travel through charming towns until we reach the picturesque village of Paucartambo.

Paucartambo is situated 68 miles from Cusco at an altitude of 2,906 meters. This town is renowned for hosting one of the region’s most significant festivals, the Festival of Virgen del Carmen.

The tour to Manu continues along the road, with a stop for lunch, until we arrive at the Cloud Forest. This area is home to remarkable wildlife such as the Spectacled Bear and the Cock of the Rock. Here, you’ll marvel at various species of plants and flowers, including orchids and bromeliads.

Upon reaching the lodge, we will take a well-deserved rest. The lodge is located in the Manu cultural zone at an elevation of 1,700 meters. Nearby, there are trails designed for exploring this segment of the Amazon rainforest. The entire circuit spans about 5 kilometers, and a tour guide will accompany you on this walk.

Enjoy a delightful dinner.

DAY 2

At dawn, we embark on a boat ride to spot the illustrious Cock of the Rock, Peru’s national bird, known for its vibrant plumage.

Following breakfast, we head to the quaint town of Pilcopata, located at 589 meters above sea level. The Manu National Park is nestled between Cusco and Madre de Dios and is divided into three sections: the cultural zone, the reserved zone, and the protected area.

For those interested, there’s an opportunity to engage in Rafting for an hour along the thrilling Koñeq river and the upper Madre de Dios river, featuring class I and II rapids. Relish the scenery and take a dip in the river to conclude this exhilarating activity.

Later, we proceed to the Atalaya Port to board a boat and explore the fascinating species of birds in the area, eventually arriving at the lodge where we will stay for the next three nights within the heart of the Peruvian jungle.

The lodge features a network of trails that can be explored anytime with a tour guide. This day includes both lunch and dinner.

DAY 3

In the early morning, we set off on a walking tour to observe the wildlife surrounding the lodge and gain insights into the local flora and fauna from our expert guide.

After breakfast, the tour continues with a boat ride across the river, followed by a 30-minute walk to explore a variety of plant species, including medicinal plants and diverse tropical fruits.

Upon reaching the Machuwasi lagoon, we will paddle in canoes to continue our quest for species of mammals in their natural habitat. This magnificent jungle is home to many species of butterflies as well as species of reptiles and giant otters.

We’ll embark on a night tour near the lodge to search for insects and nocturnal creatures. All meals are provided on this day.

DAY 4

This day kicks off with a special tour as we take a morning walk to admire an impressive kapok tree with its striking roots. Take in the splendor of the untamed vegetation all around.

The Manu National Park is a protected natural area recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

We’ll return to the lodge for breakfast and then embark on a boat ride along the Madre de Dios river to reach the Aguas Calientes pools, in a captivating tour lasting an hour and a half.

You can enjoy a refreshing dip in the river while taking in the breathtaking Peruvian jungle and savor a delicious lunch.

We’ll enjoy a well-earned rest at the lodge, followed by a delicious dinner. As night falls, immerse yourself in the sounds of insects, animals, and birds—a unique experience not to be missed.

In the lowland rainforest, temperatures range from 25–32°C with high humidity; in the cloud forest, nights can be cool (10–15°C). Mosquitoes are present year-round. Peak season is June–September; advance booking is recommended. Pack lightweight, quick-drying clothing, a rain poncho, and sunscreen to fully enjoy your trip.

Typical tours to Manu National Reserve last 3, 4, 5, or more days. A common itinerary departs early from Cusco, crosses Andean viewpoints and the cloud forest (Paucartambo/Pilcopata) with opportunities to spot the Andean cock-of-the-rock, and spends the night in an eco-lodge. The tour then travels along the Upper Madre de Dios River into the lower rainforest for interpretive hikes, canopy tours or observation towers, macaw clay licks at dawn, lakes, and a nighttime boat trip to see caimans. Transfers can total 7–10 hours by road and 2–4 hours by boat, spread over several days. The pace is moderate, with early mornings. Please review the operator's detailed itinerary.

The difficulty is easy to moderate: hikes along wet and slippery jungle trails, heat and high humidity, and riverside embarkation/disembarkation. Basic physical fitness is recommended, and you should always follow the guide's instructions and the rules of the protected area. Main risks: weather, rivers, and mosquitoes; wear boots, insect repellent, and appropriate clothing. Small groups improve safety and wildlife viewing. Although it's not a high-altitude tour, the route from Cusco has curves; bring motion sickness medication if needed.
