Tour Description

DAY 1

Our journey begins bright and early with a hotel pickup in the city of Cusco. The drive will take us through quaint villages until we reach Paucartambo, situated at 2,906 meters above sea level. This charming town is celebrated for the La Virgen del Carmen festival.

As we proceed to Manu, we'll have lunch and continue to the Cloud Forest. Along the route, you'll witness astonishing flora and fauna such as orchids, bromeliads, and the Peruvian national bird, the cock of the rock.

Manu National Park straddles the regions of Cusco and Madre de Dios. Spanning 2 million hectares, it is divided into three areas: the Manu reserved zone, the cultural zone, and the restricted zone.

We'll reach our lodge in the cultural zone of Manu for an overnight stay. This rustic lodge offers lovely trails extending about 5 kilometers for exploration with a professional guide. Enjoy a delightful dinner.

DAY 2

We start our day early with a brief tour to seek out the iconic Peruvian bird, the Cock of the rock. Returning to the lodge, we'll have breakfast before continuing our trip to Pilcopata.

Experience the thrill of Rafting on the Koñeq or Alto Madre de Dios rivers, featuring class I and II rapids, for an hour of excitement and adrenaline.

Next, we proceed with our tour to the Manu National Park, heading to the Port of Atalaya for a boat ride to our second lodge near the Alto Madre de Dios River, enveloped by 90 hectares of lush jungle biodiversity.

We will explore the surroundings of the lodge, walking the nearby trails to admire various plant species. Later, we'll venture on a night tour to discover insects and amphibians. All meals are included this day.

DAY 3

During our morning walk, the tour guide will share insights about the area's biodiversity, the ecological systems in place to protect these regions, and the principles of sustainable development. We will take a boat across the river and then embark on a 30-minute walk, observing the impressive local flora.

The day in Manu continues to the Machuwasi lagoon, where we'll paddle rustic canoes to observe wildlife like birds, monkeys, and alligators. Manu is part of the world network of Biosphere Reserves.

At night, enjoy a walking night tour around the lodge to spot insects. Meals are included throughout the day.

DAY 4

We start our final day early, taking a boat to visit the macaw clay lick, a clay wall favored by various species of birds seeking nutritional balance. This is a wildlife spectacle not to be missed.

After returning to the lodge, we'll take a boat back to the port of Atalaya, where our transportation will return us to the city of Cusco. Lunch is provided along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

A typical tour package to the Manu Rainforest includes ground transportation from Cusco and boat travel, accommodation in ecolodges, full board, a bilingual naturalist guide, and excursions such as jungle hikes, sunrise walks, and nighttime wildlife viewing. It usually includes basic equipment (rubber boots, poncho) and purified water. Flights, alcoholic beverages, tips, personal expenses, travel insurance, and vaccinations are not typically included. Some activities (macaw clay licks, observation towers) and entrance fees depend on the itinerary and season. Review the tour details before booking to confirm services, number of nights, and conditions.

The tour typically begins early in Cusco, crossing the Andes into the cloud forest and descending into the Peruvian Amazon. The journey combines road travel with river navigation to reach the lodge. The intermediate days include hiking, bird and mammal watching, visits to lagoons, sunrise/sunset excursions, and interpretive activities with a local guide. The final day involves returning to Cusco by river and land. The duration varies between 3 and 7 days depending on the package and the area of Manu visited. Transfers can take 7–10 hours by road and 1–4 hours by boat, depending on the lodge.

The best time to visit Manu is usually during the dry season (approximately May to October), with less rain, more passable roads, and excellent conditions for hiking and wildlife viewing, including macaws, monkeys, caimans, and, with luck, jaguars or giant otters. The rainy season (November to April) offers more lush rainforest and swollen rivers, but with more mud and possible itinerary changes. The climate is hot and very humid in the Amazon (25–32°C), while nights in the cloud forest can be cool. Pack light layers, a raincoat, and sunscreen year-round.

For the Manu Rainforest excursion, pack a light backpack, quick-drying clothing, a long-sleeved shirt and pants, a raincoat, closed-toe non-slip shoes, sandals, knee-high socks, a hat, sunglasses, insect repellent (DEET or icaridin), sunscreen, a headlamp, batteries/power bank, binoculars, and a waterproof case for your camera/phone. Add a personal first-aid kit and any medications. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended, and you should inquire about malaria/dengue prophylaxis and prevention based on your medical history. Purchase travel insurance. Drink purified water, wear a life jacket on the boat, and always follow the instructions of the local guide. Do not feed or touch any wildlife.

The ecolodges in Manu are rustic and comfortable, blending seamlessly with nature. They offer rooms with beds and mosquito nets; bathrooms can be private or shared, with showers (hot water available in some). Electricity is usually provided by generators or solar power for a limited number of hours; charging points are limited, and Wi-Fi and cell phone service are generally unreliable. Full board is provided, featuring home-cooked meals and local products; water is purified. Please inform us in advance of any vegetarian or vegan preferences or allergies. For sustainability reasons, lighting is reduced at night: bring a flashlight and minimize single-use plastics.
