Machu Picchu translates to “Old Mountain” and is situated 80 miles northeast of Cusco city, nestled in the Peruvian Andes Mountain Range and bordered by the Vilcanota River. The citadel was constructed by the Inca Pachacutec between 1400 and 1500 A.D., serving as an exclusive residence for Inca aristocracy. Positioned in a subtropical area with diverse microclimates, Machu Picchu stands at an elevation of 2,430 meters above sea level.
During the guided tour, you will have the opportunity to explore this magnificent archaeological site, often referred to as the Lost City of the Incas, for a duration of 2 hours. The site is rich in local flora and fauna, surrounded by various species of orchids and tree forests. Additionally, the area is home to insects, mammals, and birds such as the “Gallito de las Rocas,” which is recognized as the national bird of Peru.
Make the most of your free time in Machu Picchu by capturing memorable photos or, if you're adventurous, you can ascend Huayna Picchu mountain (optional) to enjoy a panoramic view of the entire citadel. Huayna Picchu, meaning “Young Mountain,” rises to an altitude of 2,700 meters above sea level. The climb is challenging, yet it could prove to be the most exhilarating experience of your life.
Recognized as a World Heritage Site, Machu Picchu boasts breathtaking landscapes and served as a primary center for Inca agriculture and the most significant urban area of the Incan Empire. Interconnected by various routes known as Inca Trails, these paths facilitated trade across the Inca Empire’s territory. The site was the main residence of Inca Pachacutec and his family. Additionally, you can choose to return to Machu Picchu town for lunch (optional).
After relishing a full day at Machu Picchu, you will head to the Aguas Calientes train station at the scheduled time to return to Cusco City. This journey will first bring you back to the Poroy train station, from where a private transport will take you back to your hotel.
