Descripción del Tour:
Bright and early, at 3:30 a.m., we’ll pick you up from your hotel in the city of Cusco. Our shared transport will embark on a 3.5-hour journey, traversing an untouched landscape of wild desert vistas, snow-dusted peaks, and roaming herds of alpacas.
Upon reaching the trailhead, we’ll enjoy a hot breakfast before starting our hike from Chillihuani, situated at 4,200 meters above sea level (13,900 ft elevation). The trek involves a 4-hour uphill hike to the renowned Rainbow Mountain in Peru.
As you ascend, you'll be treated to the beautiful landscapes of the Andes, featuring glacial peaks, the red valley, rocky hills, and traditional llamas and alpacas grazing in the area. At the summit, you may spot some Andean wildlife, including vicuñas, known as the Andean camel. This is the sole place in Cusco to witness them in the wild. Vicuñas belong to the same family as llamas and alpacas but are smaller and their wool is the most valuable in the world.
Once we reach the top at Rainbow Mountain, there will be ample time to capture photos and relax, even in the high altitudes, while admiring the majestic views. You’ll have the chance to see the Ausangate Mountain right before you, which is the tallest mountain in Cusco (almost 21,000 ft) and part of the Vilcanota Range.
While exploring this stunning location, our tour guide will share fascinating insights into the composition of these magnificent mountains, which were formed millions of years ago, and how they achieved their striking colorful appearance.
After snapping some incredible photos and soaking in the views (perhaps spotting a few condors overhead), we’ll begin our descent with a 2-hour downhill hike. We will then reconnect with our transport, which will take us to a local restaurant where we can savor a delicious hot lunch.
Finally, we’ll return to Cusco, arriving around 5:00 p.m., and drop you off at your hotel.

The excursion to the Rainbow Mountain, or Vinicunca, is an unforgettable experience. The itinerary generally begins very early, around 4:00 a.m., with a vehicle ride from Cusco to the starting point, the town of Cusipata. From there, a hike of approximately 5 km lasting between 3 and 4 hours through Andean landscapes and spectacular views begins. Upon reaching the summit, tourists can enjoy the impressive multicolored view, a natural geological phenomenon. The excursion concludes with the return to the starting point and a transfer back to Cusco in the afternoon.
It's important to wear appropriate clothing for mountain hikes and cold weather, including a windbreaker, hat, gloves, and hiking boots. Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a water bottle are also recommended to stay hydrated throughout the hike. It's also helpful to bring some energy-boosting snacks like nuts or cereal bars, as the physical effort is considerable. Don't forget your camera to capture the spectacular views and a poncho in case of sudden rain. Carrying everything in a comfortable backpack will make the trek easier.
The total length of the Rainbow Mountain excursion varies, but generally ranges from 12 to 14 hours, from pickup in Cusco to return in the afternoon. The hike itself lasts 3 to 4 hours each way, depending on your pace and weather conditions. The entire trip is a full-day experience, including transportation to the starting point, the hike, and the return journey. It is recommended to be prepared for a long day, bringing what you need to be comfortable throughout the excursion.
The hike to Rainbow Mountain can be considered moderate to high due to the altitude, which reaches approximately 5,200 meters above sea level. The hike is challenging, especially due to the thin air, which can make breathing difficult. You must be in good physical condition to fully enjoy the trek. Those with preexisting health conditions should consult their doctor before participating. However, the effort is worth it, as the scenery and views are spectacular. Horses can be rented to facilitate the ascent.
Rainbow Mountain is a popular destination, and organized tours are generally safe, as long as you follow the guidelines provided by tour guides and take necessary precautions. It's important to be aware of the altitude and take steps to prevent altitude sickness, such as properly acclimatizing in Cusco before the trip. Guides are experienced and well-equipped to assist tourists. Furthermore, you should go at your own pace and rest when necessary. At all times, it's crucial to follow safety recommendations and stay on designated trails.
